Putting the "Study" in Study Abroad

While living in Copenhagen has sparked my sense of adventure, it is important to remember that the studying aspect of study abroad is also important. With all of the excitement that comes with living in a new country, it can sometimes be hard to find the motivation to get assignments done outside of class.

Back at my home university, I am used to having exams requiring intense studying that I am able to block out specific times for. However, at DIS I have yet to have a single exam and most of my larger assignments are group projects that require planning around multiple people's schedules. On top of this, having field studies at different times each Wednesday can make it difficult to establish and maintain a routine. I have found myself procrastinating more and requiring more effort to motivate myself to complete even simple assignments.

In an effort to restore my academic spark, I have been on the lookout for the perfect study spot. For me, this usually involves lots of windows and quiet chatter. While most cafes would be perfect, to ease the temptation of burning my budget on pastries I prioritized places that allow you to bring in outside food. While I still have many more places to explore, I have so far found two places that seem to boost my motivation and productivity as soon as I enter.

The Black Diamond Library

Just a 10 minute walk from the Gammel Strand Metro station, the Black Diamond Library has beautiful views of the canal and has quickly become my favorite study spot! Right when you walk in, there is a small cafe with tables lining floor to ceiling windows. While you work through your to-do list, you are guaranteed a perfect view of The Circle Bridge and canal!

One downside is that some days the area by the cafe can be a little busy making it a bit noisier and harder to find a table. As someone who usually appreciates chatter around me while I'm working, I don't mind it and I've found that if you just stick around for a little while, a table will most likely open up!

If you are someone who likes less crowded or quieter spaces, there are many other study rooms scattered throughout the library! Some spaces act as quiet rooms for independent work while others welcome conversation and may be a great option for working on group projects. If you take some time to explore the library, I am sure you will find a spot that aligns with your study preferences!

Greenhouse Study Lounge

This study space is located on the third floor of the DIS studenthub, making it an ideal spot for the days I have longer gaps between classes but don't want to spend my time traveling back to my homestay or to another library.

The plants, large windows and natural colors create a calming environment that eases stress and seems to make it easier to get started on assignments that I had been procrastinating.

Since it is such a warm and inviting space, there are also comfier seating options if you are just looking for a space to relax before class!

While this is a designated quiet study space and there isn't much chatter, I find that it is perfect for assignments that require more focus such as writing a paper or reading research articles. Similar to the Black Diamond Library, the studenthub has various study spaces scattered throughout the building. I would recommend taking some time after class to walk through each floor. You never know what you might find!

While adjusting to academic life in Copenhagen has had its challenges, finding good study spots has helped me shift back into an academic mindset. Starting to establish a routine by carving out specific times to visit these spots and setting goals for what I intend to get done during each visit has allowed me to feel more grounded and focused. Hopefully as I continue to stay on top of my new routine, the procrastination will subside!

As always, if you have any questions about academics or life at DIS, feel free to reach out!
