Saying Goodbye
Just like that, the part of the semester I was dreading the most is almost here. In just 4 days I will be leaving Copenhagen and heading back home to the US. This past week I have been savoring every moment with my host family, biking more, and trying to explore parts of the city I never made it to. There are many mixed emotions when I think about going home. On one side, I miss my family and friends and am excited to be back to my normal life but I will also miss my host fam

Getting Ahead on Finals
As classes are coming to an end in Copenhagen, I have felt a mix of emotions. On one hand, it is bittersweet to be finishing up my coursework. On the other hand, with all of the final projects on my plate I am glad to see the finish line in sight. At DIS, there is a lot of emphasis on group work in a lot of my courses. I have had multiple presentations and still have one more presentation to go before closing out the semester. I have also had many papers and am finally workin

A Week in Finland
Last week my core course traveled to Finland for our long study tour! We flew out of Copenhagen on Sunday and arrived in Helsinki where we spent a few days before going further north to Rovaniemi and then returning to Copenhagen on Friday. Sunday After arriving in Helsinki on Sunday, we boarded a bus to Nuuksio National Park where we enjoyed a fireside lunch of salmon, potatoes, salad, and broccolini. Once we finished lunch, we were given the opportunity to explore the park o

Field Studies
One of the things that initially drew me to studying with DIS was all of the opportunities they offer for experiential learning. Every Wednesday is dedicated to class field studies. Instead of having regular classes, professors plan for the class to travel to a local business or place that is relevant to what we have been learning in class. Throughout the semester, each class has two field studies and DIS does an amazing job of making sure that none of your field studies over

Easter on Bornholm
This past weekend was Easter break at DIS and myself, among many other students, had plans outside of Copenhagen. Every Easter, my host family takes the ferry to Bornholm, a small Danish island off the coast of Sweden to visit their relatives. About a month ago, they had graciously extended an invite to me and I was beyond excited to join them on their vacation! Thursday On Thursday afternoon, I boarded a bus at Dybbølsbro Station that would take me to Ystad, a small town on

A Piece of Home
It's hard to believe that we have already passed the halfway point of the semester. I have officially been in Copenhagen for over two months and have more time behind me than I have left to spend in Denmark. I am already beginning to dread having to say goodbye to my host family and leaving the plethora of tasty pastries behind. However, as time has passed, I have also found myself starting to miss the familiarity of life back home. It just so happened that right as these fe

Off The Beaten Path
One of the things I wanted to prioritize when studying abroad was getting out to see places that aren't typical tourist attractions. Places and things that I wouldn't have the opportunity to see if I was only in Copenhagen for a week. This past weekend and opportunity arose to go on a solo adventure out of the city. Determined to find a forest, I boarded the regional train to Roskilde, Denmark. In the little bit of research I did, I found a small forest just 20 minutes outsi

Spring on the Horizon
After a month and a half of cloudy and freezing temperatures, it seemed like winter would never end. As someone who usually doesn't like the heat of summer, I found myself daydreaming of Rhode Island summers; sunsets on the beach and long walks with friends. Although we still have some more weeks of colder temperatures and the possibility of a second winter, I have greatly been enjoying the small taste of spring Copenhagen has recently gotten. One day this week I woke up to t

Putting the "Study" in Study Abroad
While living in Copenhagen has sparked my sense of adventure, it is important to remember that the studying aspect of study abroad is also important. With all of the excitement that comes with living in a new country, it can sometimes be hard to find the motivation to get assignments done outside of class. Back at my home university, I am used to having exams requiring intense studying that I am able to block out specific times for. However, at DIS I have yet to have a single

Weekend Whereabouts: Fastelavn and Frozen Lakes
This past weekend my host family and I celebrated Fastelavn, a Danish holiday that takes place on the Sunday seven weeks before Easter. This tradition was started in the middle ages to celebrate one last feast before lent but now it is a holiday celebrated mainly by children. Many kids will dress up in costumes and neighborhoods and schools hold celebrations where children can line up for a chance to swing at a barrel or piñata. This tradition started as freeing a cat from a

Playing Across Denmark: Core Course Week
Monday: February 2, 2026 After an early 6am wakeup and some breakfast, I took the S-Train from my homestay to Dybbl ø sbro station. My core class was to meet at 7:45am to board a bus to different schools outside of Copenhagen. Our class was broken up into two groups, one that would go to a skovbørnehave, or forest kindergarten, and another that would go to a school for children with disabilities. As part of the group going to the skovbørnehave, I made sure to bring my snow pa

Planes, Pastries, and Pillow Fights: My First Week Abroad
From Boston to Copenhagen After a 2 hour car ride from Southern Rhode Island, my parents and I arrived at Boston Logan International Airport. Although excited, the dread of having to say goodbye loomed over me. Not only would I be thousands of miles from close family and friends, but I would also have to adjust to city life. Growing up in rural New England, I never imagined myself living in a city. I find so much comfort in the small-town feel of UNH, my home campus, with it'

Pre-Departure Ponderings
Hej! Welcome to my first blog post! My name is Abby and I am a junior at the University of New Hampshire. In just a few weeks, I will be flying from Boston to Copenhagen and starting my study abroad journey with DIS! "Why Denmark?" The skeptical question that is more often than not paired with a confused eye brow raise following the initial excitement of telling someone I'll be studying abroad. Apparently Denmark isn't the first place most people think of when the words "stud
